MADISON (WKOW) -- A criminal complaint in the death of 5-year-old Brayden Turnbill states Dakota Black was the only adult home the afternoon the child suffered a fatal injury. Black, the boyfriend of Brayden's mom, is charged with 1st degree reckless homicide. Brayden died three days after suffering what authorities determined to be blunt force trauma to his head at a Sun Prairie home. A doctor told investigators Brayden's injuries indicated violent shaking or impact to this head, according to a criminal complaint released Wednesday. The criminal complaint states Brayden's mom, Shannon Turnbill, found her son with bruises on his chest and abdomen the afternoon on October 22. She told authorities Brayden's eyes were partially rolled back and he was making "gurgling noises" in the basement on his bed. She asked Dakota Black to call 911. Black told authorities he was the only adult home with Brayden during the afternoon in question. He said he did not hurt or shake Brayden but the boy didn't feel well after school and wanted to lay down. When asked about how Brayden got hurt, Black to investigators, "I don't know but the way he is...on my watch." When asked what that meant, Black said "you know what that means." When questioned again, he told the detective, "whatever happened on my watch" and "I am responsible." Black was scheduled to have his initial appearance in Dane Co. court today, but that appearance has been pushed back until Friday. Brayden's family members say it's another hiccup in the drawn out process for justice. "You can deal with a death of natural causes, but how do you deal with the death of a child that was murdered," Christine Stone says. She says since they can't have Brayden back, they want the right person to go to jail.
